Not only is it easy to assume that anything that gets flushed down a toilet or washed down a drain is gone forever, but the septic tank is buried underground in a drainage field. Bad Smells
Obviously, the contents of a septic tank will smell foul, but most of the time the smells are confined to the tank itself. If you notice too many odors outside of your tank in or around the drainage field, the septic tank could be overflowing and shouuld be emptied as soon as possible.
Slow Drains
If your septic tank is too full, there won’t be anywhere for your wastewater to go. You might start to notice your sinks draining more slowly than usual, and you might even see your drains backing up things get really bad.
Standing Water
You might notice puddles of standing water on your property if you’ve been getting a lot of rain lately, but you shouldn’t be seeing the same thing during a relatively dry season. If you do notice a lot of standing water when there shouldn’t be any, it could be coming from a septic tank that desperately needs to be emptied.
These are just a few of the signs that your septic tank will need to be pumped. As long as you stick to a regular schedule of having your septic tank pumped every three to five years and you pay attention to these signs, your septic system should serve you and your family for years to come.
